I don't care for the oil pan/ timing chain cover nexus, the 2 should be totally independent of each other but this is how GMs engineers make a shorter, lighter block, you'll spend more in labor than you'll save in gas performing maintenace on this engine than youll ever save in gas; but that is a criticism of GM engine design than GMs cover. The cover seals just fine so long as you drop the pan to install the cover.
